P-L-A-Y Like A Youth
My niece-daughter set up Netflix for herself, her 4-year old son and me. For her son she made sure that he could only watch the cartoons she wanted him to watch. Checking to see if I had started using Netflix she saw all the cartoons that she didn’t want her 4-year old son watching. In essence, this little boy had figured out how to watch what he wanted to watch using my account. In the process of him playing, he realized that he could scout out and find other cartoons. When she inquired about why all of these cartoons were in my Netflix, he stated, “Auntie Jacqui did that.”
You know it got me thinking. We shirk back from discovering new things all because we are just too afraid to venture into a place we’ve never been. I’ve heard so many say that they just can’t learn the computer or they make it so hard they can’t figure out the simplest of things. Then it dawned on me! All we have to do is PLAY like a youth!
Can’t you remember that child-like abandonment that you had as you played and discovered new things? Yes, you made some mistakes but that didn’t stop you from discovering and learning new things, or simply, just having a great time.
Along the way, you realized those things that you should do and those things that would harm you. This 4-year old kid figured out a way that he could do something just by playing. Howbeit it was the wrong thing for him to do, but he wasn’t afraid to step out and do it.
You know we can apply this philosophy to our entire life. When we learn to play like a youth most of the things we find to be drudgery will no longer be that way. Even exercise.
Many of us know that we need to exercise, but when we think about it we always feel as though it is just too much. Just thinking about it makes you tired. What if you transformed your mindset about exercise? What if you just PLAY like a youth? Just have fun discovering new ways to move your body. You don’t have to look at as exercise, but look at it as rediscovering the kid in you.
When you go back to that child-like place of discovery and self-discovery there are so many things you will begin to do. You no longer have self-imposed limitations on your capabilities and what you can do. One of my favorite sayings of King David’s is when after dancing in total abandonment and his wife condemned him for acting foolishly in front of the people he emphatically stated, “…therefore will I play before the LORD.” 2 Sam 6:21 (KJV).
I heard Bishop T.D. Jakes say that we are still those young people trapped inside of decaying bodies. That same child is still inside of you waiting to be unleashed. Embrace and welcome the kid inside of you and do as David did, PLAY like a youth!

And David said to Michal, I was dancing before the Lord, who put me over your father and all his sons, to make me a ruler over the people of the Lord, over his people Israel: and I will go on playing before the Lord; 2 Sam 6:21 (BBE)
Then he said to them, “I can guarantee this truth: Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes a child like this in my name welcomes me. Matt 18:3-5 (GW)
Father, Thank you for instructing me to become like a child and experience the fullness of who You created me to be. In my child-like abandonment I am no longer afraid to look foolish as I glorify You in all I do. In doing so, I not only please You and experience exuberant joy, but I experience success I never thought imaginable as I embrace the kid in me and just PLAY. Amen.
