I had similar conversations with two friends. Each one of them expressed how they felt their actions had disappointed God. Every one of us at some time or another has been in that same situation. We may have reverted back to a familiar habit or we just didn’t do what we knew in our hearts God was instructing us to do. My concern was not about the action, but the reaction.
Although each of them had done exactly the same thing their reactions to their actions contrasted drastically. This had nothing to do with how much they loved the Lord, it had more to do with each of their perceptions of the relationship they had with Him and their perceptions of themselves.
You see, there are those who allow the enemy to drag them into intense self condemnation that it skews their perception about how much God loves them and the magnitude of His forgiveness. Rather than hold on to the love of God, they elect to become accomplices to the enemy using their minds as an idle playground. You see, when your thoughts are consumed with the things of God, there is no room for the enemy to enter. In essence, your mental playground is totally off limits. Every entry has been blocked because pervasive God-thoughts prevent him from coming in to wreck havoc on your mind.
It is best not to entertain him. Thoughts of despair accompanied by self-condemning thoughts have one express purpose and that is to prevent you from glorifying God and fulfilling your purpose. Whereas one of them was caught in a quandary and felt she had reached the point of no return; conversely, the other person who had committed a similar act felt empowered and took authority over the situation.
It was astounding how two God-fearing women could approach the same problem with opposing attitudes. What we permit to enter our hearts will ultimately play a critical role in how we perceive ourselves and how open we are to complete deliverance from self-defeating thoughts and actions.
Every self-defeating behavior begins with a self-defeating thought. You have to arrest those thoughts way before they cause you to stray away from God’s plan. They limit you from stepping out of fear and doing it anyway. In essence, they will cause you to shut away in shame, guilt and doubt with disillusionment of hopelessness that separates you from the intense love of God.
Transformation from conformity begins when you confront the bullies that think they control the mental playground of your mind. At some point, you no longer relinquish control of your emotions and you move into the exceeding mindset of God and the will and purpose He has for you.
Just like the friend who peered beyond the mishap and was able to move out of the realm of self-condemnation, you also will become empowered. You see, every mishap that happens in our lives should catapult us to a higher mindset. This higher mindset propels you to move closer to God in order to take on the mindset of Christ. That means that you don’t cower in defeat but you confidently proceed because your elevated thought-pattern, coupled with the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, propels you to take action and experience the exceedingness of God.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. Romans 8:6-9 (KJV)
And be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2 (MNT)
For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Cor 2:16 (KJV)
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Phil 4:7 (KJV)
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 Cor 10:3-6 (KJV)
Father, There are times when I may fall down, but that doesn’t mean I am utterly destroyed. Help me to overcome self-defeating thoughts that cause me to revert back to past habits with the intense purpose of preventing me from fulfilling my purpose. In my heart of hearts, I know You are an exceeding God whose lofty thoughts for me are immeasurable. No longer will I allow my mind to linger as an idle playground just waiting for someone to come and take control of it. I will be transformed and no longer conformed to a limited mindset because I will inundate my mind with Your Words of empowerment and annihilate the demonic bullies trying to take over my mind and cause me to move away from You and not embrace the fullness of my purpose. Knowing You are for me is more than this whole world against me and that means through the enabling power of the Holy Spirit I victoriously overcome with authority every demonic attack waged against me, my mind, my destiny and purpose and most importantly my relationship with You. Amen.
