No Charge | Showers’ Blessing PicSpire | Jacqui Showers

Gospel artist Shirley Caesar sings a song entitled, “No Charge.” She sings about a young boy who has given his mother a list of things he has done. Beside each chore is a cost. The mother meditatively reads the list.

When she is finished she begins to write her own list. She writes down how she carried him for nine months. She goes on to write how she stayed up when he was sick. As she lists all she had done, after each one she puts no charge. At the end of the song she simply states “When you add it all up the full cost of real love is no charge.”

Oftentimes hearing the song, it causes me to think about my own mother’s sacrifices. I think about how difficult it must have been to birth and raise 10 children, while juggling their idiosyncrasies, habits, likes and dislikes to make sure they succeed. I think about the sacrifices she made so we would have, when she didn’t. As a single parent, it all falls on you. There is no one there to help carry the load. Interestingly enough, when it is all said and done each of us walked away with our own perception of our upbringing and her maternal practices.

Relationships are critical to our existence. Without them where would be. The most crucial ones are those between a parent and a child. From infancy and well into adulthood, we look to our parents for guidance and direction. We may or may not always adhere to those instructions, but we look to them to be there, regardless of our actions or how insensitive we may be about their sacrifices.

Then one day we have an epiphany that make us re-evaluate our parents. We realize what they did is priceless. There is absolutely no amount of money in this world to repay them. We can never truly comprehend the breadth and depth of those sacrifices.

More than 2000 years ago, Jesus, the sacrificial Lamb, paid a heavy price for each of us. He was beaten beyond recognition, nailed to a cross and hung as a spectacle. Although none of us were alive, the cries of the people that went forth continue to reverberate to crucify him. Our very breath and life is tied to the cross and His sacrifice.

Our society seeks to silence Him as they did in that hour. Yet the blood of the Lamb continues to cry out. Those of us who have placed his blood on the spiritual doorposts and lintels of our lives, experience the benefits of His sacrifice every day. We are no longer in bondage to the strongholds that prevent us from walking in absolute victory; because we have experienced a spiritual epiphany that propels us to unparalleled success. We unequivocally know that the power of His blood sets us free from the deathly limitations of this world.

The breadth and depth of the sacrifice is unquantifiable, yet we are qualified solely by His grace, mercy and and His sacrifice. It is the empowering presence of God that causes every death situation to pass over us. Daily we overcome by His blood and our words. Faith in His blood is the healing force that transforms our minds to live victoriously.

“What does all this cost?” No Charge!

Saddest Words I Ever Heard | Showers’ Blessing PicSpire | Jacqui Showers

Growing up there was a song, “Almost,” that started with the singer bellowing, “The saddest words I ever heard were almost…not quite, but almost.” The lyrics illustrated various scenarios of almost achieving victory. But, the one I remember the most was the guy who likes this girl but he is too shy to let her know how he feels. Once he gathers the nerve to tell her, she is dating another guy. I often think about these lyrics and realize that so many people live them out every single day.

Almost is never good enough. This sad word haunts many about all the missed opportunities that slipped away. You were almost there, but you never quite hit the mark. So it is with many of our dreams, visions and our goals.

We have them and we ponder over them year-after-year. We dwell in the land of “fit tin’ to” and we never quite can get to the land of accomplishing it.

When I was a young girl I remember a pastor telling us about his dreams. One dream was that he was going to have a great affair at Cobo Arena in Detroit, with renowned guests and singers. The place would be packed out.

Well, it never happened when I was young; but it did happen when I was an adult. Just like that guy who finally got up enough nerve to approach the girl but it was too late, so it was with him. Sure, he had the event, but by that time the dream had fizzled to about 200 people in a place that could seat 12,000. He almost realized his dream, but he was too late for its complete manifestation.

Timing is critical when you are in pursuit of your dreams. There is an allotted time for everything and when the iron is hot, you just have to strike it hard with everything you got.

These are haunting words when you were so close to success but for whatever reason you didn’t quite succeed. More often than not your inability to succeed is steeped in fear, just like the guy who was too shy to pursue the girl.

In a conversation with the pastor, he indicated that listening to others prevented him from pursuing his dream. You have to be so careful of those “others” who claim to support your dream when in actuality they are there to stop your dream. Everybody who says they are with you is not really with you. Especially when you share your dream and they find myriad reasons why you shouldn’t pursue them.

Later for haters! Who need them? For sure, not me and not you!

You do need to have faith and passion in your dreams. You do need to have the courage to step out and to do them. You do need to be relentless in your pursuit. You definitely need to move away from the saddest words I’ve ever heard, “not quite, but almost.”

Love-Lights in the Marketplace| Showers’ Blessing Inspires | Jacqui Showers

“I was afraid of you and avoided you,” a colleague once told me. Again, I received those same words from another person who attended my church. Wow! I learned their feelings after I got saved. Even then, I was amazed at their words, and even more that they avoided me because of fear.

I thank God for those whom I met along the way who represented Christ to the point I coveted what they had. They were not brow-beating me with a fire-brimstone message trying to force me to being saved, but they simply displayed love and devotion to God through their actions and deeds. Neither were they afraid to engage in conversations with me that included a broad spectrum of topics including faith.

Every day we encounter people in the marketplace. We cannot be afraid to interact with them. We cannot become so holy that we can’t even hold a decent conversation with them, because we use religious jargon that repels and not compels. Love and kindness is what draws, not pious conversations that are steeped in condemnation and judgment.

You want to make such an impact that you love people to want what you have. How do we love people to want to serve the Lord through business? How do we become that person of influence for someone to say that I want to live for the Lord? You may never say that you need to be saved, but your life speaks volumes that causes them to want to be saved. It worked for me!

We have to be that way in the marketplace where people covet what we have. Not because we are beating them down and not because we are afraid to associate with them, but because we love them. Love and kindness, have I drawn thee. As they watch us, they see God through us in our actions, our work ethic and how we extend love to them regardless of how they treat us. God is calling for us to go out into the 21st century mission-field, the marketplace, and draw them through love and kindness.

How loving is your light? Do your words align with your actions and deeds? Are you afraid to engage others in a conversation?.

Lace Them Up! Get Out There!

Shoe-string budget header-3

You can run, but you can no longer hide. Regardless if you are a business, faith-based, community-based or individual, if you don’t have an online presence you are missing the mark. Your online presence is even more critical now than ever before with  3.7 billion consumers using the Internet as a resource for information. Some even say it is their primary resource. They live or die by what they read or hear on the Internet.

If you have not included it into your marketing strategy or you are still on the sidelines afraid to lace up shoes and get in, you are already far behind the game. The evolution of online marketing and having an online presence is only increasing moment-by-moment. If you want to play, lace up those shoes and get into the game.

One of my sisters is petrified of the Internet. Her shoes are still unlaced…actually she hasn’t even put the shoestrings in yet. It is almost comical how she feels that it has this supernatural power over her. Many of you feel the same way. Don’t be afraid of it.

Truly it is not big as you, but it definitely can help you be big. The beauty of it all is that it doesn’t have to cost you an enormous amount of money, in some instances you don’t have to spend a dime, just your time.

Here’s some tidbits I want to share with you on branding and marketing on less than a shoestring budget…

  1. Post consistently. Be careful not to be overbearing. You must be consistent with posting. You can’t do it today and then wait a month, week or a few days and do it again. Your goal is to build up a following. You need evangelists to carry your message far and wide. Be consistent so your evangelists can help you spread the message. Create a schedule incorporating each of your social media platforms in leveraging your content.
  2. Target your posts. Every post should be targeted to your target audience on all the social media platforms you use like Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest. If you don’t know who your target audience is, you need to take some time and figure it out. It is useless posting and you don’t know who you are trying to reach. If you don’t know how, seek assistance to help you with your market segmentation.
  3. Manage your posts. Tools like Hootsuite and Buffer can help you manage your content and share even when you are busy, for little to no cost. You can set it up with scheduled posts to each of your social media platforms all in one swoop. Your content can post immediately, or you can schedule it as far as six months in advance. You want to work smarter and not harder. As you grow, you may want to invest in expanding those services. Each of them offers free usage with limited capabilities. That can be enough for you in the beginning. I’ve come to realize that it takes ingenuity, courage, confidence and just plain ole get to it-ness for you to be successful.
  4. It’s in the mix. No one will stay engaged to anything if they get the same boring thing every time. Mix it up. With YouTube, Periscope, Facebook Live and more, you don’t have to put the same content out there every time. Learn how to repurpose your content from a blog post, to an email, to a podcast, to a Periscope or Facebook Live stream and more. Your content should not just be words, but pictures, videos etc. Be creative with your posting, but make sure your graphics are high quality and aesthetically appealing. You don’t want to look amateurish; and you don’t have to look amateurish. There are enough sites out there like Canva and Fiverr where you don’t have to unless you want to, or you’re just too lazy and don’t care.
  5. Consider the source. You are only one source, but there are myriad sources to draw from. Include your content, others’ content, business related posts, quotes and other topics to capture the attention of your audience. You have to cultivate relationships with others and share their information. It is a quid pro quo hook-up. You help them and they will help you. You can only reach so many people, but with the help of others you can reach even more and help them do the same.
  6. Be creative…show off your personality. People get bored with just seeing stuff about your business, let your personality burst forth. Humanize yourself. Give insight into who you are and your brand. Because you are your brand. Act like a 2-year old! Have fun with it while providing invaluable information that keeps them coming back, becoming an evangelist for you and even more, become a loyal and committed consumer for your product or service.

Got it! Don’t trip over your shoe laces any more. Lace them up. Get out there and brand and market on a shoestring budget with little to no money.

Celebrate Memorial Day! | Showers’ Blessing Inspires

Our patriotism for those who fight and sacrifice so much, even their lives, for us is grossly under celebrated. Not long ago, I remember the patriotism of America for those who had given their lives. Flags hung from houses as we were proud Americans honoring our war dead. In school, we learned the battle and celebratory songs in celebration of our country and those who gallantly served this country with honor and dignity. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance with pride knowing it united us not just as a nation, but as a country committed to God.

Today, most of our children don’t know those songs because of cuts from our music departments and we don’t sing them at home as we once did. Most them don’t know the Pledge of Allegiance because God’s name is mentioned. We are more concerned about offending, than uniting in a nationwide commitment to our country and our freedom.

Many are not sure why we celebrate Memorial Day and just find joy in having another day off work. It is a time for us to celebrate our war dead. These are the women and men who unselfishly gave of themselves and sacrificed the ultimate in battle, their lives, so we can have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They exhibited the greatest love by dying for us to be free.

Join me this Memorial Day to celebrate the millions of women and men who died so we can enjoy freedoms unlike any other nation. Pray for the strength of their families who lost their loved ones, some during battle and others later with lingering wounds acquired during battle.

Let us join together with pride knowing that their efforts and sacrifice were not in vain and will never be forgotten. We salute each of them throughout the history of America for their bravery, their courage and their sacrifice for us to be one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Celebrate those who died for us! Celebrate Memorial Day!

Celebrate Our Mother’s Legacy | Showers’ Blessing Inspires

Every May I celebrate life! I celebrate my mother and the legacy of her life. This year would have been my mother’s 100th birthday. Even though she has since left the earth realm almost 20 years ago, I continue to celebrate her life and thank God in His infinite wisdom I was born as her 10th child. Or in the words of my mother, “I am her baby and will always be her baby.” In this week, I celebrate both her life and my life.

A few years ago one of my grand-niece’s mother celebrated my mother’s life in a prayer. She extolled my mother’s life because of her offspring. She never had a chance to meet her, but because of what she instilled in her children this young woman was reaping the benefits of my mother’s legacy.

I remember reading some notes from one of my mother’s notebooks where she had written a plea to the Lord, “Please let my life count.” When I read the plea it brought me to tears. All I could think about was how much her life did count and was continuing to count with each life that our lives touched. Naturally as this young woman prayed and thanked God for my mother’s life, it took me back to that plea. I was overcome with emotion.

Although my mother had been gone from the earth realm for more than a decade she continued to touch and inspire others. Oftentimes we are so consumed with the here and now we lose sight of the fact that one day we are all going to leave this earth. Our entrance from the wombs of our mothers is the first step as we journey towards the distance horizon of the day we leave this earth.

All that we accomplish from the day we were born to the day we leave here should have some impact on someone else’s life. Oftentimes we find ourselves stagnated because we don’t fully comprehend that when we pour into someone else, where they travel and all the lives they touch we impact as well. Wow! Each one does truly reach one.

More than any of my other siblings I have my mother’s physical features and often peer into the mirror and it is as though her reflection is gazing back at me. Each of us has some parts of who she was and this is not just limited to the physical. All of us have the same compassion and love for others as my mother did and extend ourselves to nurture and help others along the way.

So it is with mothers. They instill so much in each of us. Along the way others are blessed by our mother’s, regardless if they are alive or not. Continuing our mothers’ legacy keeps them alive.

Today, celebrate your mother’s life and all that she poured into you. Regardless if your mother is still living or not, you are the most precious of her legacies. Make your mother’s life count by spreading the love and compassion she gave you, not just to your children but to others as well. That is how you keep your mother’s legacy alive. That is how I keep my Mother’s legacy alive.

Happy Mother’s Day
